¿Conoces la canción de Bob Dylan, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again?

Well, the Memphis style is back. But, what is it?

Contrary to what you might think, the interior design style known as Memphis has nothing to do with Memphis, Tennessee. Do you know the Bob Dylan song, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again? This song was played repeatedly during a first meeting held by a group of designers and architects in Milan, Italy, which resulted in the founding of the Memphis Group. (Memphis Group). The group was headed by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass.

Normally, what do you do when you’ve seen the same thing for a long time? You want a change, right? Well, that’s how this group of creatives thought after living the years of Mid-Century Modern (1950/60) and minimalism (1970). It was time for a 360 degree change. It was already 1981, time for a change. Sottsass directed the line of thought towards the radical, eccentric and even towards the comedic. This movement even wanted to discard everything considered, normal and in good taste at that time. To throw color and figures in the interior design!

What elements are included in this style?

Terrazzo materials on walls, floors and pieces, El Bacterio (a particular graphic design by Sottsass “type scribbles”), Pop Art color palette (primary) and more recent in Neo-Memphis (pastels), use of multicolor, shapes non-traditional where the traditional ones went, Art Deco geometric figures, unusual aesthetics, black and white stripes, repeating patterns.
